I have just read the press statement issued by Garba Shehu informing the world of PMB’s approval of overseas’ medical treatment of the former VP, Ekwueme.
That statement has left me with shock and I ask: why must this government cheapen the presidency, reduce it to a certain shallowness? Why?
Overseas’ medical treatment is a privilege /perquisite granted by the medical services and vacation provisions of the Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State (And Other Ancillary Matters) Act, 1999. See Section 5, Part 1 of the Act.
The President does not have to approve the medical treatments of former Presidents, Heads of State, including Vice Presidents under the Act. It is a given. See the title and commencement section of the Act. And Section 5- Interpretation Section- which classifies Heads of State as including Prime Ministers; Vice Presidents as including former Chiefs of General Staff.
So you know!
